Hey Foodies ! Recently we visited this new shop called B Laban that opened up in Al Khuwair. Got to hear quite a lot about it through social media, where everyone was raving about this dish called koshari. Curiosity piqued, decided to do a bit of research, and it turned out koshari is considered the staple food of Egypt and is even known as a dish for the humble folks.
Read another article which suggested that Koshari has got its name from the Indian Kichadi when the British folks went in 1800's to Egypt !
Keeping aside history, excited to try this trending item, we walked into B Laban in an afternoon .
The icecreams on display stole my attention at first. However, reminded myself to stay focused and use all the concentration techniques learned so far to stick to our mission: trying koshari.
Approaching the counter, without a second thought we confidently ordered koshari. The guy behind the counter asked if I wanted nuts with it, and of course, we said yes, even though it bumped up the price a bit. As we waited, we couldn't help but notice how skilled the supplier was, effortlessly swirling and precisely adding each ingredient to the serving bowl.
When our koshari arrived, it was a mix of vermicelli, milk, nuts, and mango—it was definitely a unique combination that gave me mixed feelings at first. The dish turned out to be quite filling, perfect for sharing between two people.
But even after tasting it, one question lingered in our mind: is this the same koshari that Egyptians refer to as the "poor man's food"? Is this a modern version of the same ?
