Pazhampori,
or banana fritters, has always occupied a special place among kerala snacks,
tugging at the weaknesses of many. We happened to hear about a twist to the
traditional pazham pori through a friend – a rendition involving pazhampori
enveloped in delicate paapadam threads, an offering found at the Food Book
restaurant in Ghobra
The
mere mention of this twist piqued our curiosity, and without a moment's
hesitation, we reached out to the restaurant to confirm the availability of
this unique treat for the very evening. The anticipation was too much, so
without delay, we set out to experience this creation known as "pazhampori
pottitherichath."
Typically,
pazhampori is prepared by dipping sliced bananas in besan flour or atta prior
to frying. This much-loved snack holds a special place in the hearts of
Keralites, and in certain corners of Kerala, it is affectionately referred to
as Ethaykka appam.
Being
avid food enthusiasts, with pazhampori serving as a particular weakness, our
enthusiasm knew no bounds as we stood before the glass display, our gaze
falling upon these artfully threaded pazhamporis, showcased amongst other
delectable treats.
We
paired these delightful treats with a steaming serving of samovar chaya (tea).
This version of pazhampori deviated from the conventional approach, bringing
out a new charm. The exterior is an enticing crunch though not with pappadam as
mentioned by our friend but with samosa laeves, while the interior revealed the
tender sweetness of ripe banana.
Indeed,
if you're seeking a change, this variation is truly worth trying.
